CM Punk: He’s the Champion WWE deserves, but not the one it needs right now.

“Because he’s the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So we’ll hunt him. Because he can take it. Because he’s not our hero. He’s a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A dark knight.” – Jim Gordon, The Dark Knight (2008)

After the ending of RAW last night I couldn’t help but think back to this line from Christopher Nolan’s film. For weeks now it has been teased that CM Punk would be turning heel and it finally came to fruition over the span of the last 2 weeks. I honestly believe the main reason this had to happen is because of John Cena’s inability or lack of desire to play the bad guy. John Cena is for all intents and purposes WWE’s version of Harvey Dent; The White Knight. WWE’s symbol of hope and all around good guy. Unfortunately it has become a dried up scenario and one that I don’t see changing anytime soon. As bad as I hate to admit it, Cena does generate money and as Derick and I were talking will probably continue to headline at least for another 10 years or more.

That being said though Cena not playing the bad guy has totally flip flopped the booking system. Remember the time where heels were booked to be super strong (Triple H 2003 World Title reign anyone?) they would dominate and continue to win to the point where you would almost think they were unstoppable. Than a face would pick up a little steam climbing up the ladder, winning a few matches here and there. Maybe have a few run ins with the Champion until they got a big win in a No. One Contenders Match.  You had a developing story line where you saw the Face play the under-dog and really struggled in his climb to the Champion and title itself.

Cena has broken that. Over the course of the last 6 years or so no matter who the bad guy was we started to cheer them; Randy Orton, Chris Jericho, Sheamus, The Miz, Dolph Ziggler the list goes on and on. We have been rooting for the heels because they have been playing the roles of the face anytime they go up against Cena. However if Cena is the person that broke this I believe 100% that CM Punk is the only person on the roster that can fix it. Punk became the number two guy in WWE over the last year by proving everyone wrong, from the people in the back to the casual fan watching at home. Punk most certainly has what it takes to be a main eventer.

I believe that Punk has a mind for the business so he understands that WWE needs a “villain” for their “hero” because just like Jim Gordon said in regards to Batman “…He can take it…” CM Punk can rise up and be the bad guy that WWE needs right now. Like I said in my last article he should be booked so strong that you actually want to see him get his ass kicked but nobody can, so when he does loose the title it actually means that much more. As of this writing CM Punk only has 97 more days to go until he knocks off John Cena’s 380 day title rein record. I can not express the empathizes or importance of how bad this needs to happen. I along with a lot of other fans out there would love to see Punk hold the title for years but sadly enough I understand all good things must come to an end.

Punk’s reign has been one of importance and relevance as I have talked about several times before. He has single handedly brought prestige back to the title and made The WWE relevant again and for that he should be rewarded. I wholeheartedly believe that CM Punk will keep the title until January 27th 2013 and will drop it to The Rock. John Cena will go on to win The Royal Rumble that night setting up for the inevitable John Cena vs The Rock Rematch at WrestleMania this time for The WWE Championship.

Now as much as I don’t want Punk to loose I believe the only way to justify him being removed from the title picture around Wrestlemania would be a heavily influenced storyline. A story line that would feature nobody less than Stone Cold Steve Austin. Austin has went on record to say that he has one big match left in him naming Punk as the person it should be against. The story pretty much writes itself due to their conflicting lifestyles and seeing it unfold on TV would be very reminiscent of The Attitude Era. Punk is on the cover of the game this year as is Stone Cold for the Special Edition. The ground work has been laid and there isn’t a wrestling fan out there from The Attitude Era that still watches today that doesn’t want to see this match happen!

Wrestlemania’s 3 big matches should be The Rock vs John Cena for The WWE Championship, CM Punk vs Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Undertaker vs Brock Lesnar. WWE is pretty much in its “sleeper” months and is usually just filled with random stories until we start to get closer to the Royal Rumble. Punk should continue to be booked and used stronger than he ever has. Turning back every person who comes after his Championship until The Rock shows up. Now is Punk’s time to shine and be as strong as he ever has been.  The company is on his shoulders and I believe he will do everything in his power to give the WWE just the thing it needs right now and carry us into what I for one hopes to be an amazing road to Wrestlemania.

“I Believe in The WWE. I Believe in Vince McMahon. I Believe in CM Punk.”

  1. Love the analogy. I’ve been going back and forth on what I think they’ll do with Punk. Regardless, I’m loving it. Ironically, I’m bored with the rest of the show so I can’t get myself to last through a whole episode. But clearly, this is “THE” run and it is Punk’s year. There HAS to be something huge in store for Punk.

The question is… will Austin job? Would it make any sense for Austin to win? ….would it make any sense for Punk to win? Punk’s the kind of guy who can lose and not even be affected by it, overness-wise. But do you put Austin over in his last match? Seems counter productive to me, even if it’s a feel good moment with the face winning.

Just when we thought they couldn’t top last year’s WrestleMania statistics… Good god… They’re going to blow that out of the water. Repeat of last year for the TITLE, Undertaker vs whomever, BROCK LESNAR, AUSTIN, and possibly Mayweather. The glass isn’t half full.. It’s overflowing.

Frankly I’d like to loosely predict that Sheamus holds onto his belt until Mania (I’m actually fine with that) and drops it to Daniel Bryan. Give the fans the WrestleMania match they were deprived of last year, but in a different light. Daniel Bryan is a star. He’s a heel the fans refuse to boo, and the crowd would pop huge if he were to topple ‘the Great White.’

Maybe the Sheamus idea will be tomorrow’s article… I’ve written three days in a row, time to make it four. (www.internationalobjects.com)
Time for bed, great article, have a good night.

  2. Oops, forgot about Dolph Ziggler. Ziggler holds the belt until Mania, defends vs Bryan. How awesome could Bryan/Ziggler be??

Thanks man. Yeah I kinda didn’t focus on The World Title picture in this write up but Shane has actually went on record to state that he believe Dolph will cash in at Wrestlemania. Kinda of a pre announced scenario. I think this is going to be a a very good year though. 🙂
