WWE Network to be a Subscription Channel

I know I’m a few days late on this, but it was announced the other day that the WWE Network, when it launches, will be a subscription/premium channel, a la Showtime or HBO.   Honestly, this is pretty much what I figured was going to happen all the way through this.

When I’m not working here at K0@2 (which, sadly, seems to be more and more frequent…trust me, we’re going to fix that, folks), I earn my living as a tech rep at Dish, a satellite television provider.  This has afforded me a bit of insight into how this whole thing was going to pan out.  At first, Vince was going to try to push the channel as something along the lines of the NFL Network or NBA TV…available mostly in sports packages, like Dish’s Multi-Sports Pack.  This would put it in a package of like programming, with there being a price set for the overall package, and would have worked out to where any provider carrying the channel would have paid Vince a set price based on the number of subscribers getting said channel.  This was apparently a hard push, since as of last tally, no major providers had picked the channel up…much to my chagrin and despite me requesting it constantly through our “Programming Request” setup at work.

This new idea, however, is going to make the channel launching a lot more possible, as it allows Vince and the providers to share in the profits, making it more attractive to the providers.

I’ll go on a limb and say that it’ll launch and be anywhere from $9.99 to $14.99 per month.  Honestly, I’ll gladly pay it.  I’m pretty certain I’ll need to invest in a second DVR just to dedicate to that channel…and a giant stack of DVDs for my DVD burner to run through.
