The New WWE Championship – Not a Fan…

During the last segment of Monday Night RAW we got to experience The Rock’s WWE Championship Celebration. The segment started off with your normal over the top segment that we have grown accustomed to in his current WWE Championship reign of not actually wrestling but killing time. I half way expected it to just be a small party of some form but once The Rock stepped into the ring and I saw that covered podium, I knew my greatest fear for the last 8 months was about to happen. Back in June we all saw the “work in progress” images of the new WWE Championship floating around on the internet. As soon as I saw it I thought it was awful. Derick and I talked about it and he thought maybe it was a sideplate. It wasn’t until Shane showed me some more pictures that I realized it was the full front of the title and if this title ever made it onto TV I would probably be very upset.

Well Ladies and Gentlemen that day has come. Now don’t get me wrong a lot of what The Rock said was true about “The Spinner” It wore out its welcome a long time ago and it clearly didn’t work with every Superstar that ever held it but for some it did. Did the title design need to change? Yes. Was this the way to do it? I don’t think so. The fact that Vince wouldn’t change The Spinner for as long as he did, by default made it somewhat prestigious in and of its own right.  It worked for people like John Cena, Randy Orton, Edge and CM Punk’s 434 Day Reign clearly made the title a major part of WWE history. People like Alberto Del Rio, Sheamus and Batista just looked really odd with this championship. Clearly it was the reason The Undertaker was World Heavyweight Champion in 2008 as opposed to WWE Champion, so the change was clearly needed.

For years though everyone has complained about The Spinner and how it should be changed back to a more traditional looking championship. During that time I always had mixed feelings about it myself but after it stopped “spinning” I had pretty much accepted it as The WWE Championship but always hoped that someone would bring back the Undisputed Championship that was previously used. Others liked the “Winged Eagle” or “The Attitude Belt” but for me personally The WWE Undisputed Belt will always be my favorite version of the championship. The fact that I own a replica of The Spinner and my number one guy currently in the business made it pretty damn relevant makes this somewhat of a bitter pill to swallow. I don’t know, maybe over time I may grow to like this new version, but something tells me taking a step back to one of the traditional ones as apposed to this new one would have been the right way to go.

I knew the end was coming but I was really hoping for a better result. I guess with this being the end of The Spinner’s life as the WWE Championship and me being the insanely huge wrestling geek that I am, I will say goodbye to it the only way I know how…

  1. Counter Point:

I know that I’m going to be the odd man out in the group here, but I like the belt. This is odd since I was originally the one that ran the post way back when that called for the head of the man who made it, but now that I see it in full light and all together, I dig it.

My favorite belt design ever is currently in the WWE as the World Heavyweight Championship, and my favorite WWE belt design was the Winged Eagle belt. The Spinner belt has definitely been the one title that I’ve hated the most since its inception, however. Yeah, it worked for Cena and, I’ll be honest, worked for Miz once he turned the W’s upside down, but I’ve seriously thought that everyone else using that belt just hasn’t looked right. I just kind of accepted it since Punk held it so long, honestly…

This one, though…it’s still garish and it’s not EXACTLY what I wanted, but it’s better, in my eyes. It honestly does look less like a toy to me and looks better than what we’ve had for the last few years.

I just wonder if since there’s no name plate, if each wrestler will get their own personalized side plate like Rock has. That could be pretty interesting if that’s the case.
